A learning experience for everyone

We just finished capstone projects for our sixth cohort! Wow! Each student has a different project idea with their own personal learning goals. Many of the challenges students face during capstones are above and beyond what they have faced during classroom time. Students must manage their time, communicate often and be able to manage their own tasks and goals. We find that this experience is invaluable in helping students develop their own workflow before they transition into their internships. No…

A New Cohort, a New President

Although we are not shocked that our new president is following through on his campaign threats, we’re still grappling with the extent to which fear and hate are dictating our federal policies. We stand against Trump’s slough of executive orders, and we’re honored to be part of a city community that will resist federal dictates. As we prepare to welcome Cohort 7 into the Ada community, we are reminded to keep asking ourselves where we can improve in creating a…

Meet Anita!

1. What were you doing before you became a Software Engineer? Before doing the whole software engineer thing I lived in Ohio and worked at Procter & Gamble for 5 years. I was a product designer/researcher and did lots of consumer, design, and quality work for the Always brand. You know, pads and pantiliners. I know a lot of random facts about periods. That stuff just flows right outta me. 😉 While the work was definitely different and lent itself…

Meet Stephanie! An Ada Supporter

How long have you been an Ada Supporter?I moved to Seattle earlier this year to start Binomial with my business partner Rich, and we started actively supporting Ada then! I love the Ada Developers Academy’s program and commitment to their community. What inspires you about Ada?I think getting more women into programming careers is so important. As a woman in an especially male dominated field within computer science, I see the need for this first-hand. I like that Ada accepts…

Preparing for the Years Ahead

Today, we continue to process the outcome of our election. We feel anger, pain, despair, and sadness. We see a divided nation. We are ashamed. We see people voting out of fear and anger. We see people who feel unheard, ignored; people who want change. We feel scared of what the future brings. We need to take some time to honor and process these feelings – individually and together. This week in our office we grieve and support one another.…

Meet Lila! C3 Graduate

1. What were you doing before you became a Software Engineer?  I worked at UW as a program administrator – I’d worked in various higher education administration positions on and off since finishing undergrad at CU-Boulder. I moved to Seattle in 2012 for graduate school in geography and I heard about Ada through a colleague there. I waited until I finished my master’s and then applied to Ada. I’d been unhappy with my career trajectory and I was ready to…

Coding Amidst Injustice

Once again, we are moved to speak on the incidents of racial violence that have occurred these last few weeks. Many of us in the Ada community – particularly those among us whose communities are directly affected by police shootings – are coding and grieving, listening to lecture and grieving, eating lunch and grieving. While our academic program continues as usual, we know that there is an exhausting dissonance for our Adies in trying to stay focused at school and…

Meet Shanna! C[2] Adie

1. What were you doing before you became a Software Engineer? I graduated college with an Economics degree and a lot of student loan debt.  I took a job as an Executive Assistant at a merchandising company in Los Angeles to focus on paying off my debt. The company produced merchandise for various music artists that were sold at retailers, online, or at concerts. It was interesting being involved in the entertainment industry, but I knew I didn’t want to…

Meet Sarah, our student counselor!

Hi! I’m Sarah, the brand new student counselor. I arrived at Ada in late July after spending several years as a case manager and counselor for formerly homeless women. I had the privilege of working with clients right as they moved into their own apartment and began all sorts of amazing transitions in their lives. I grew up in Seattle and briefly left to go to school in Iowa, where I studied gender and history. When I’m not at Ada,…
